WHEN THE WORK’S DONE IN THE FALL

Some folks like the springtime
When the birds are building nests
\While some prefer the summer
When flowers are at their best.
Others enjoy the autumn…
They like it best of all,
But give me the good old wintertime
When the work’s done in the fall.

The juicy apples have been picked
And oh, how good they taste…
The fragrance in the cellar
Reveals their hiding place.
There are Jonathans and Winesaps,
Northern Spies and all
To be eaten up with lots of zest,
When the work’s done in the fall.

Piles of orange pumpkins
Make me dream of pumpkin pie;
Hams and shoulders hanging high
With sausages to dry.
There’s a barrel of cider vinegar
And canned fruit in the hall,
Plenty of sturdy food to eat…
When the work’s done in the fall.

Then when the wind begins to howl,
And the snowflakes start to fly,
When all the leaves have fallen
And the wild geese are passing by,
Grandma will knit by the fireside
While the cat plays with the ball.
That’s the best time in the country…
When the work’s done in the fall.

2011 SPECIAL ACTIVITIES

Phil Nielsen and daughter, Sara,

are getting their Belgian horses ready
for wagon rides.

Members of the Waterman Lions Club
had a record crowd for their butterfly
pork chop sandwiches.

The "cooking crew" from the DeKalb County Cattlemen's Association did a great job grilling up some of that delicious DeKalb County beef!

Our crew at U-pick is always happy
to help customers with
their pumpkins.

NIELSEN BELGIANS - Phil Nielsen will be bringing his horses out again this fall.  Phil's horse drawn wagon rides are one of our fall favorites.  Young and old alike enjoy stepping back in time to when these beautiful animals were used for farm work.  The horse drawn wagon rides will be available on Sundays  from 1:00 to 4:00 beginning on Sept. 15, weather permitting.

Looking for some new ideas for your next party or special event?  Why not consider having Phil bring his horses out for your company party, family reunion, caroling party, you name it?  What a great way to add some old fashioned fun.  Give Phil a call at 815-220-9011.

WATERMAN LIONS CLUB PORK CHOPS - SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 25
Waterman Lions Club was at the orchard on September 25 serving up some of their delicious grilled pork chop sandwiches.  The sandwiches were wonderful and they sold out ahead of their scheduled time.  Proceeds from their barbeques are used to help fight blindness and diabetes worldwide.  Your support of this dedicated organization is greatly appreciated.

CATTLEMEN'S ASSOCIATION STEAK FRY - SUNDAY, OCTOBER 2

We want to thank the DeKalb County Cattlemen's Association for coming out to the orchard to grill up some of their FAMOUS steak sandwiches.  Once again, we received many compliments from customers who came out for this popular event.

PUMPKIN HARVEST WEEKEND - OCT. 7, 8, 9 & 10
We had a great weekend for Pumpkin Harvest Weekend. The weather was beautiful and lots of people were able to find that special Jack-o-lantern pumpkin.  Three lucky people won a giant pumpkin.  They're going to be doing some serious carving!
